RECIPE: Aromatherapy Playdough with Plant Based Food Coloring

Homemade play dough is far superior to store bought, but it smells awful, am I right? Once I went full hippy, actually even part-hippy, I stopped using traditional food coloring. It’s nasty. Look it up. The problem is, most plant-based food coloring is muted and, let’s be real, looks vaguely like dirt. They don’t create the fun colors kids want to play with.

I found this amazing plant-based food color powder that creates bright fun colors! It does have a scent but it is muted when used to create playdough and is easily overpowered by essential oils, even just a few drops depending on which you choose. I do not mention any specific essential oils in this recipe because you can use any your heart desire. Personally, I would use orange for orange, lemon for yellow, lime for green, Valor for purple… you get the idea.

1.5 cups of water
2 cups of Flour
1/2 cup Salt
2 TBSP Cream of Tartar
2 TBSP Vegetable Oil
1 TBSP Vegetable Glycerine
• Bring 1.5 cups of water to a boil.

• Add food coloring powder until you reach your desired vibrancy.

• Add the dry ingredients.
(If the color isn’t bright enough, you can add more now.)

• Add the vegetable oil + glycerine.

• If your play dough is dry, add hot water 1 TBSP at a time until you get the right consistency.

• Knead. Knead, Knead.

• Separate into balls and add the essential oil of your choice, one drop at a time. You can always add more. You can’t take it back out.
