Recipe: Aromatherapy Face Mask Spray

If you had asked me in 2020 what projects I was considering for my 2020 Holiday Crafts Essential Oil Class, face mask spray would not have made the cut. In fact, it never even crossed my mind until recently. I don’t think masks are going away anytime soon so I came up with a recipe to make them at least a little more enjoyable... and not smelling like beef and cheese.

First, let’s talk essential oil sprays. There are recipes a plenty online that tell you to simply combine distilled water, witch hazel (or vodka, or salt), essential oils and shake. The thing is, it doesn’t matter how vigorously you shake the bottle, those ingredients do not dilute and solubilize (blend/combine) essential oils into water.

Don’t go all “Angry Elf” on me. It’s science. Don’t believe me? You can deep dive here.

If you are a visual learner like me, Gina from “Not Your Average Oiler” has a great post illustrating how well (or not) each does solubilizing essential oils in water here in her Facebook group.

In order to dilute and solubilize essential oils into water you need one of the following:
Grain Alcohol (190+ proof, like Everclear)
Polysorbate 20 or Polysorbate 80
Solubul

Say it with me, "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear, AND WITCH HAZEL AND VODKA DO NOT DILUTE ESSENTIAL OILS."

Both recipes below will effectively dilute and solubilize essential oils into your mask spray. The recipes call for one drop of essential oil. That isn’t a typo. Start low and slow. Add one drop and test it out. Run an errand with your snazzy aromatherapy mask. If you want a slightly stronger scent, add one more drop and repeat. You don’t want to overwhelm your system. A light, subtle scent is what you’re going for.

To use the spray, gently mist your mask. Let the spray dry fully before putting your mask on.
